The National Service Authority (NSA) has disclosed that 50 unaccredited tertiary institutions were previously allowed to participate in Ghana’s national service programme. The revelation came from NSA Director-General Felix Gyamfi during an interview on June 15, 2025.
Mr. Gyamfi explained that some of these institutions had expired accreditation while 18 others had never been accredited at all. Despite this, graduates from these schools were accepted into the national service scheme—a practice that will now be abolished.
Going forward, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) will be solely responsible for verifying the accreditation status of institutions before their graduates are allowed to participate in national service. Any university not recognised by GTEC will be automatically excluded.
The NSA’s new transparency measures come in the wake of a major scandal involving ghost names and fraudulent activities within the system. The Authority aims to restore credibility by ensuring only qualified graduates from legitimate institutions serve the nation.
