President John Dramani Mahama has announced a bold step towards digitizing Ghana’s road toll system. As part of the 2025 Economic Policy and Budget Statement, he revealed that his administration plans to eliminate traditional tollbooths in favor of a fully automated toll collection system.
The new system will link every vehicle in Ghana to its owner’s Ghana Card, enabling toll charges to be automatically deducted from the owner’s mobile money or bank account.
“We said in the budget that we were going to reintroduce road tolls. The good thing today is every car is linked to the owner’s Ghana Card,” Mahama stated. “We don’t need the old toll gates anymore.”
With this system, drivers will no longer need to stop at tollbooths. Instead, cameras will capture vehicle details as they pass through toll zones. If the toll is GHS 1, the amount will be directly billed and deducted digitally, quickly and efficiently.
“We’ll take a picture of your car, send the bill to your Momo or bank account, and just deduct one Ghana cedi,” he added.
The goal of the initiative is to enhance revenue collection, reduce inefficiencies in manual toll systems, and offer Ghanaians a more convenient experience on the roads.
President Mahama emphasized that stakeholder consultations are ongoing to finalize the implementation process, but assured that the system will be simple and user-friendly.
