The Ghana Police Service has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, in the Aowin Tano and Tano Anwia areas near Enchi in the Western Region.

In a statement released on Monday, May 26, 2025, the Police announced that the Special Anti-Galamsey Taskforce is focused on identifying more individuals involved in the destruction of forest reserves and illegal mining operations.

“The Ghana Police Service remains resolute in its support for national efforts to combat illegal mining,” the statement read.

As part of the ongoing efforts, the Taskforce conducted a successful operation in Samreboi, a known galamsey hotspot. The operation led to the arrest of seventeen suspects on Saturday, May 25. The suspects include seven Chinese nationals and ten Ghanaian citizens, all of whom have been transported to Accra to assist with further investigations.

This latest action is part of broader national efforts to protect Ghana’s natural resources and clamp down on the environmental degradation caused by illegal mining. The Police have indicated that operations will continue in other galamsey-prone areas across the country.
