The Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) has applauded the Ministry of Education for extending the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy to include private senior high schools.

In a press statement issued on May 29, GNAPS described the move as a progressive step toward inclusive education. The statement, signed by GNAPS President Prof. Damasus Tuurosong, highlighted the vital role of private institutions in national development.

GNAPS also welcomed the government’s decision to revise the 30% priority placement policy for Category A public senior high schools. The policy, which reserved 30% of placements for students from public basic schools, has now been reduced to 15%.

While the Association continues to advocate for the total removal of the placement quota, it acknowledged the revision as a positive gesture that promotes fairness in Ghana’s education system.

Prof. Tuurosong emphasized that the original policy was implemented without consulting private education stakeholders and has had damaging effects on private basic schools, including reduced enrolment and possible closures.

GNAPS believes this latest move signals the government’s willingness to engage more meaningfully with non-state actors in education, ensuring a more inclusive and balanced approach to policy development.
