A tragic incident has rocked the farming community of Chiene in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of Ghana’s Western North Region, where a 19-year-old boy has drowned in an abandoned galamsey pit.
The deceased, identified as Herod Cobbina, is reported to have joined some friends in illegal mining activities when the unfortunate event occurred. According to eyewitnesses, Herod drowned in the pit, which had been left uncovered and unguarded.
His father, Nana Kwabena Nipa III, who is a respected figure in the community, expressed deep sorrow while speaking to the media. He revealed that he was on his farm when he received a distress call. By the time he got to the scene, his son’s lifeless body had already been retrieved from the pit.
Nana Nipa suspects foul play, citing unclear details surrounding the incident. He is calling on the Bibiani police and other relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the truth and hold any culprits accountable.
The tragic death of Herod Cobbina has renewed concerns over the growing number of abandoned galamsey pits scattered across mining communities in Ghana. These pits continue to pose a significant danger to residents, especially the youth, who are often lured into illegal mining in search of quick income.
Local leaders and residents are now demanding stricter enforcement of mining regulations and proper closure of abandoned sites to prevent future loss of life.
