For the first time in Ghana’s educational history, 25 private senior high schools (SHSs) have been officially integrated into the government’s flagship Free SHS programme. This milestone initiative, announced by the Ministry of Education, is part of the 2025 Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) and aims to expand access to quality secondary education.

According to the Ghana Education Service (GES), the selected schools—labelled Category E—are co-educational day institutions spread across all 16 regions of Ghana. They offer a variety of academic programmes including General Arts, Science, Business, Technical, Visual Arts, Home Economics, and Agriculture.

This inclusion forms part of a pilot programme developed in collaboration with the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS). The Ministry has extended the school selection deadline to June 25, 2025, allowing candidates ample time to revise their choices.

The Ministry emphasized that this initiative targets regions where public SHSs are oversubscribed and aims to ensure equity and accessibility. The selected private schools will undergo capacity-building, receive infrastructural support, and align with operational standards of the Free SHS policy.
