The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially announced Saturday, January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries to elect a flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The decision was taken during a key National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. The party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, confirmed the date, noting that it was unanimously approved by the party’s National Council.

“The Committee also discussed the timing of our presidential primaries,” Kodua stated. “The National Council concluded that this does not require a constitutional amendment. Therefore, the presidential primaries will be held on January 31, 2026.”

The announcement sets the stage for an intense and highly anticipated contest, with interest growing among both veteran politicians and new contenders eager to lead the NPP into the next electoral cycle.

Party officials have assured members that detailed nomination guidelines, campaign timelines, and a strict code of conduct for aspirants will be published in the coming weeks. The NEC has pledged to maintain a transparent and credible electoral process that reflects the NPP’s commitment to internal democracy.

As Ghana’s largest opposition party, the NPP’s choice of flagbearer is expected to have significant implications for the 2028 political landscape.
