A fire broke out late Tuesday night, June 17, 2025, at the Medical Laboratory complex of the Korle Bu Medical School in Accra, damaging key administrative offices. Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) successfully contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading to nearby buildings.

According to a statement from the GNFS Greater Accra Regional Public Relations Office, the fire started around 11:50 PM and affected the Accounts Office, Stores, Administration, and Archives sections of the laboratory building.

A coordinated emergency response from multiple GNFS stations—including the Regional Headquarters, Accra City Fire Station, National Headquarters, and the Ministries Fire Station—was launched to tackle the flames. The fire was brought under control by 12:43 AM and fully extinguished by 4:10 AM on Wednesday morning.

“No injuries were recorded,” the GNFS confirmed, adding that the rapid and professional response of the fire crews was instrumental in saving nearby facilities such as the Allied Sciences Building, Diabetic Centre, and Stores Annex.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. GNFS has initiated overhauling operations to ensure there are no residual hotspots that could reignite the fire.

The incident has raised public concern given the strategic importance of the Korle Bu Medical School, which is part of the University of Ghana’s College of Health Sciences and is located within the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital enclave. Investigators are expected to assess the extent of damage to critical documents, research materials, and equipment housed in the affected units.

Authorities have praised the bravery and professionalism of the fire service personnel involved in the overnight operation.
