The Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, says government is intensifying efforts to tackle Ghana’s recurring flood problems through improved drainage systems and sustainable solutions.
Addressing Parliament, the Minister noted that recent floods in Greater Accra, Ashanti, Northern, Western, and Volta Regions were triggered by excessive rainfall and poor urban planning. He stressed that flooding remains one of Ghana’s most destructive natural hazards, often leading to deaths, property damage, and economic disruption.
To address the challenge, the Ministry is collaborating with the private sector to implement green and nature-based infrastructure, including rainwater harvesting, wetland protection, and permeable pavements. Pilot projects are ongoing in key river basins to model future interventions.
Mr. Adjei also highlighted the World Bank-supported Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, which targets flood control and solid waste management in the Odaw Basin.
An estimated $6 billion is needed for a comprehensive national flood control program. MPs have urged the government to release emergency funds to NADMO and address coastal erosion and tidal waves in the Volta Region.
