Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has reassured the public that the government has not received any formal notice from the United States about Ghana being added to a new travel ban list.

His remarks follow a statement by U.S. President Donald Trump on June 14, 2025, indicating plans to impose entry restrictions on citizens from 36 additional countries, potentially including Ghana. According to The Washington Post, a leaked memo from the U.S. State Department suggests that the restrictions are part of a broader immigration enforcement policy.

Addressing Parliament on June 19, Minister Ablakwa emphasized that “there is no cause for alarm,” as Ghana has not been officially notified by any U.S. agency.

“Ghana has not been officially informed that we are to be placed on any travel prohibition list,” he stated. He further disclosed that his office has initiated diplomatic engagement with U.S. officials to seek clarification on the matter.

“I have asked for official assurance that the leaks are unfounded. So far, I can confidently assure Ghanaians that there is no cause for panic,” Mr. Ablakwa said.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to protecting the rights and freedom of movement for Ghanaian citizens, adding that his ministry is closely monitoring all developments related to the alleged U.S. travel ban.
