Ghana and Eswatini have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing joint cooperation and trade relations between the two countries. The agreement was formalized during the state visit of King Mswati III, the monarch of Eswatini, to Ghana.

The MoU was signed by the Foreign Ministers of both nations and is expected to serve as a framework for deepening collaboration in key areas including trade, culture, and diplomacy.

King Mswati III, who leads Eswatini’s absolute monarchy, arrived in Ghana on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, and was received at the Jubilee Lounge by Ghana’s Chief of Staff and senior government officials. He then proceeded to the Presidency, where he was welcomed with a Guard of Honour.

Speaking during the official ceremony, President John Mahama praised the long-standing cultural and diplomatic ties between Ghana and Eswatini and emphasized the importance of enhancing intra-African trade.

“Your visit and the bilateral discussion that will take place after will form the framework for the cooperation that exists between our two countries,” President Mahama stated. “I wish to warmly welcome you, the queen, and your delegation to Ghana.”

In his response, King Mswati III expressed deep appreciation for the hospitality extended to his delegation and stressed the urgent need for stronger African trade networks.

“We are looking forward to seeing the people of this country and to exchange a lot of information. We have a lot in common—especially when it comes to culture and lifestyles. A lot of ideas could be developed. If you look at the trade within Africa, it is very limited. It is high time we turn that around,” the King said.

The visit was organized under the auspices of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, who will host King Mswati III during his four-day stay in Ghana.

The King is also expected to visit the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, where further discussions on regional trade integration will take place.

The state visit signifies a new chapter in Ghana–Eswatini relations, with both nations pledging to work closely in promoting regional trade, cultural exchange, and diplomatic cooperation.
