The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the government will recruit 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff in the year 2025. This move is aimed at strengthening Ghana’s education sector and addressing long-standing teacher shortages across the country.
Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, June 25, the Minister assured legislators that full financial support for the recruitment exercise has been captured in the 2025 national budget.
“Mr. Speaker, as I have assured this House, 50,000 teachers will be recruited, along with 10,000 non-teaching staff. Adequate provision was made for this in the 2025 budget,” Haruna Iddrisu stated.
The announcement comes on the heels of recent calls by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who demanded an inquiry into reports of teachers being mishandled during a protest at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters.
Addressing the issue, Minister Iddrisu disclosed that financial clearance for the previous batch of recruits was granted in May 2024. However, due to a delayed start in September, the clearance expired on December 31, 2024, requiring new approval.
“They were expected to start work in August but began in September. Naturally, by December 31, the clearance had expired. They can only proceed with a renewed clearance, which I am currently awaiting,” the Minister clarified.
Haruna Iddrisu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resolving outstanding posting issues and ensuring that newly hired staff are deployed efficiently. The large-scale recruitment effort, he said, forms part of a broader education reform agenda to:
Address teacher shortages
Strengthen support services
Improve learning outcomes across basic and secondary schools
The inclusion of 10,000 non-teaching staff is also expected to improve operational efficiency in schools, enabling teachers to focus more on instruction and curriculum delivery.
This recruitment drive is one of the largest the sector has seen in recent years and reflects the government’s resolve to expand access to quality education across all regions of Ghana. Stakeholders in the education sector are hopeful that timely financial clearance and deployment will ensure smoother implementation and long-term impact.
