Ghanaian international musician Tillie Gya, currently based in the Netherlands, made a stirring appearance on Melody FM’s PM Jam with host Haruna Babangida on June 30, 2025. The interview spotlighted his powerful new reggae single titled “Unfair”, a socially conscious song that resonates with issues of discrimination, racism, and cultural division.
Speaking from Holland, Tillie Gya expressed heartfelt sentiments behind the song, which challenges society’s biases based on religion, language, race, and ideology. With lines like “Is it because I don’t speak your language? Is that why you’re so unfair to me?” the artist captures the alienation many face globally.
“It’s about real-life experience,” said Tillie Gya. “Coming to Europe, I saw how differences in race, religion, and language affect how people treat each other. This song is a reflection of that pain, but also a call for unity and respect.”
Tillie Gya, whose real name and origin are deeply rooted in Ghana, revealed that his name “Gya” symbolizes fire and energy. The name was given to him back in Ghana National College, where he earned a reputation for bringing powerful energy and motivation through music.
Having previously released over 30 songs, including a 2009 collaborative album with Ghanaian producer Appietus, Tillie has worked with major names like Castro. However, his musical journey took a detour when he relocated to the Netherlands, briefly pausing his Ghana-based music career.
The single “Unfair” was reintroduced to Ghanaian audiences through Melody FM and has since gained significant traction, especially in Takoradi. Tillie noted that the song’s relevance has only increased with current global events, including conflict and systemic inequality.
“The goal is to remind people of humanity. Not to teach, but to remind. Respect is key. Whether someone collects your trash or wears a different religious attire, they deserve dignity.”
Primarily rooted in reggae and dancehall, Tillie Gya’s music is also infused with Afrobeat and highlife elements. Though reggae is his mainstay, he prides himself on being versatile.
His upcoming album will feature “Unfair” and promises collaborations with both Ghanaian and Jamaican artists. The project marks a return to his roots and aims to bridge global and African audiences through impactful lyrics and cultural rhythms.
Tillie Gya didn’t shy away from discussing the current state of Ghanaian music, expressing concern about the dominance of commercial, sexually driven content.
“Music should uplift and inform. Ghanaian highlife music used to be full of positive messages. Now it’s mostly trends. We need to bring balance back.”
Tillie Gya’s music, including “Unfair,” is available on all major streaming platforms such as Spotify, YouTube, Audiomack, and TikTok. Listeners are encouraged to stream, share, and use the track in social media reels to support the movement.
“Unfair” is not just a song—it’s a statement. Tillie Gya is using his platform to raise awareness, share lived experiences, and reconnect with the Ghanaian audience. With a new album on the horizon, this is just the beginning of a bold musical comeback.
