The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating infrastructure development, improving service delivery, and advancing sustainable urban transformation during the Second Ordinary Meeting of the Third Session of the Ninth Assembly.
Delivering the Sessional Address at the Assembly Chamber in Sekondi, Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon. Frederick F. Faidoo, highlighted major achievements recorded since the Assembly’s previous meeting while outlining key interventions expected to shape the future development of the metropolis.
The MCE disclosed that the Assembly generated GH¢9.8 million in Internally Generated Funds (IGF) as of June 30, 2026, representing 47.2 percent of its annual revenue target. He noted that the Assembly remains focused on improving revenue mobilization while ensuring prudent financial management to support development priorities.
On infrastructure, Hon. Faidoo announced significant progress on major road projects across the metropolis. The Design and Construction of Selected Roads in Sekondi-Takoradi (Phase I) has reached over 95 percent completion, while rehabilitation works on several strategic roads continue under the Government’s “Big Push” agenda to improve mobility and stimulate economic growth.
Addressing environmental sanitation and disaster resilience, the MCE said the Assembly has intensified drainage improvement works, identified unsafe structures for demolition or renovation, and strengthened flood mitigation measures through collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO). He added that sanitation campaigns and nationwide clean-up exercises have been expanded using a decentralized Sub-Metro approach to encourage greater community participation.
In the education sector, the Assembly supported preparations for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), promoted menstrual hygiene education, and celebrated outstanding achievements after STMA emerged Overall Champion at the 2026 Inter-District Sports Festival. Outstanding teachers and schools were also recognized during the 2026 Best Teacher Awards.
The MCE also highlighted ongoing climate and sustainability initiatives, including the construction of five bio-digester plants in selected senior high schools to convert organic waste into clean cooking energy. Preparatory work is equally underway for an Integrated Waste Bio-digestion and Recycling Plant under the C40 Cities Finance Facility to promote sustainable waste management and create green jobs.
As part of efforts to build a smarter and more inclusive city, STMA continues to implement the Smart SDG Cities Programme, strengthen active mobility through walking and cycling initiatives, and prepare for the launch of the “STMA Rides with the Mayor” campaign to promote environmentally friendly transportation.
The Assembly also updated members on key social interventions, including support for persons with disabilities, expanded enrolment under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Programme, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) renewals for vulnerable residents, and the Ghana School Feeding Programme, all aimed at improving the welfare of residents across the metropolis.
Hon. Faidoo further announced progress on strategic initiatives, including the establishment of a permanent TELC German Language Examination Centre at Takoradi Technical University, implementation of the Safe and Sound Cities (S²Cities) Initiative to enhance youth participation in urban development, and efforts to strengthen migration governance through the establishment of a Migration Desk.
Looking ahead, the Assembly is also exploring the development of a 24-Hour Economy Market at Kojokrom, proposed tourism investments at the Bisa Abrewa Museum and Monkey Hill Eco Park, and the completion of several infrastructure projects transferred by the Coastal Development Authority (CODA).
The Metropolitan Chief Executive called on Assembly Members and stakeholders to continue working together to promote inclusive governance and accelerate the socio-economic transformation of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.
