A five-member committee set up by President John Mahama will start hearings today, Thursday, 15th May, to look into petitions calling for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

The committee is led by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang and was formed under Article 146(6) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution. It was set up after a prima facie case was established and in consultation with the Council of State.

The Chief Justice is facing five different petitions accusing her of misconduct. Three of these petitions will be examined during the hearings.

President Mahama, after consulting the Council of State, suspended the Chief Justice and formed this committee to investigate the matter fully.

The committee is expected to meet three times a week. After completing its work, it will present its findings and recommendations to the President.
