Dance Leaders Call for TGMA Category to Boost Industry

In a passionate call to action, two of Ghana’s leading dance influencers Onga Dancer of Dance Me Africa and Azonto Baby of SNG Dance Academy both in Takoradi are advocating for the inclusion of a dance category at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).

During an interview on Melody FM’s “Chart Down Ghana” with Quorby Spencer, both dance leaders emphasized how essential national recognition would be for the growth and development of the local dance industry.

“Having a dance category at the TGMA would be a game-changer for the dance industry in Ghana,” said Onga Dancer. “It would not only recognize the hard work and creativity of dancers but also provide a platform for them to showcase their talents.”

Azonto Baby echoed the same view, highlighting how dance is deeply embedded in Ghanaian culture.

“Dance is an integral part of Ghanaian culture, and it’s time we give it the recognition it deserves. A TGMA dance category would boost the industry and encourage more young people to pursue dance as a career.”

The dancers stressed that recognizing dancers at a national awards scheme like TGMA would elevate their status, inspire creativity, and provide well-deserved rewards and visibility.

The TGMA (Telecel Ghana Music Awards) is regarded as one of the most prestigious music award events in the country. Many believe that the inclusion of a dance category would bring balance to the awards, acknowledging not just musicians and producers, but also the dancers who help bring music performances to life.

As the campaign by Onga Dancer and Azonto Baby gains traction, the spotlight is firmly on TGMA organizers to respond — and potentially set a new standard in valuing dance in Ghana’s entertainment ecosystem.
