A significant fire erupted on the evening of Wednesday, May 28, 2025, affecting parts of Maaha Beach Resort, a renowned tourist destination in Ghana’s Western Region. The blaze reportedly originated around 7 p.m. at the neighboring Vision Beach Resort, believed to have started in the kitchen area, before spreading to Maaha Beach Resort.
Eyewitnesses described the rapid spread of the fire, which consumed several beachfront structures, including guest accommodations near the main pool. An eyewitness recounted, “The fire didn’t start from our end but from Vision Beach. It started from the kitchen through its front desk before it spread to our place [Maaha].”
Initial firefighting efforts faced challenges. A fire tender from the nearby Atuabo Gas Processing Plant was unable to intervene due to the specific chemicals used in their firefighting systems. Subsequent assistance was sought from fire stations in Axim and surrounding areas, which eventually helped bring the situation under control.
While Vision Beach Resort was completely destroyed, Maaha Beach Resort suffered partial damage, with eight rooms affected. A source within the Ghana National Fire Service noted that the swift intervention of fire personnel prevented the fire from spreading further within Maaha Beach Resort.
This incident marks the second fire-related event at Maaha Beach Resort in recent years. In June 2023, a fire outbreak occurred, which the management attributed to frequent power outages and heavy rainfall. At that time, the resort assured patrons that operations continued unaffected, emphasizing that only a section of the facility was impacted.
The recurrence of such incidents raises concerns about fire safety measures and emergency preparedness in the region’s hospitality sector. As of now, the exact cause of the recent blaze remains unknown, and authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. There have been no reports of injuries.
