Ghanaian nurses and teachers will soon have the chance to work in Jamaica, thanks to a new bilateral agreement between the two countries aimed at strengthening cooperation in education and healthcare. The deal offers employment opportunities abroad and aims to strengthen international cooperation in education and healthcare.

The agreement was finalized during the Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) conference held in Brussels. It follows high-level discussions between Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and Jamaica’s Foreign Minister, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith.

“Jamaica is ready to receive nurses and teachers from Ghana under a special bilateral partnership,” Minister Ablakwa announced in a Facebook post on Saturday, May 24, 2025.

The agreement creates a formal framework for the recruitment of qualified Ghanaian healthcare and education professionals to meet Jamaica’s increasing demand for skilled personnel in these sectors.

This move is similar to Ghana’s successful nurse deployment program to Barbados, which began in 2020 and has already seen hundreds of Ghanaian nurses working across the Caribbean.

Key benefits of the Ghana-Jamaica agreement include: Employment opportunities for Ghanaian nurses and teachers in Jamaica, streamlined immigration and expedited accreditation processes for professionals, competitive salaries aligned with international standards and enhanced bilateral cooperation in trade, tourism, education, sports, and culture.

Minister Ablakwa praised the agreement as a mutually beneficial initiative that strengthens the long-standing ties between Ghana and Jamaica while addressing modern labor market needs. In addition to the labor exchange, Ghana and Jamaica have agreed to deepen collaboration in other key sectors including trade, agribusiness, tourism, sports, and cultural exchange.

“This partnership honors our shared heritage while addressing contemporary labour needs,” Ablakwa emphasized.

The government anticipates that this initiative will improve the global mobility of Ghanaian professionals and enhance the country’s diplomatic and economic ties with Caribbean nations.
