The National Communications Authority (NCA) has taken decisive action against regulatory violations in Ghana’s broadcasting sector by ordering over 60 FM stations, including major outlets like Wontumi FM and Asaase Radio, to immediately halt operations. This directive, issued on June 12, 2025, affects multiple branches such as Wontumi FM’s Accra and Takoradi outlets and Asaase Radio’s Accra station.

This sweeping suspension follows a comprehensive frequency audit and a ministerial directive from the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation. According to the NCA, the move aims to uphold broadcasting integrity by ensuring that all operators comply with the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), and its associated regulations under L.I. 1991.
Violations were categorized as follows:
28 stations are broadcasting with expired authorisations despite being instructed to cease in 2024.
14 stations failed to set up operations within two years after authorisation but continue to operate illegally.
13 stations have only provisional authorisations and have not paid the full required fees.
7 stations paid fees but failed to meet other critical regulatory requirements for final approval.
The NCA stressed that none of the affected stations currently hold valid authorisation or certificates of compliance. They may only return on-air after rectifying all infractions. The regulatory body emphasized its support for media freedom but underlined the importance of compliance to ensure professionalism in Ghana’s broadcasting space.
