Rotational Nurses and Midwives Set for Nationwide Strike Over 12 Months of Unpaid Allowances

The Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association of Ghana has announced plans to embark on a nationwide strike starting Monday, June 2, 2025, over the government’s failure to pay their outstanding allowances. According to the Association, its members have gone 12 months without payment, and multiple appeals to the Ministry of Health have been ignored.

In an interview, Association President Ebenezer Boateng expressed deep frustration over the continued silence from the government.

“The minister has not communicated officially to us, which is very sad. They now see us as insignificant in the health sector, in the ministry, and even to the public,” he said.

Mr. Boateng stated that the Association issued a 14-working-day ultimatum to the government, but no response has been received. He confirmed that the strike will proceed as planned if no action is taken. The group says this is not a new issue and that payment delays have plagued rotational nurses and midwives for over five years, with promises often made but never fulfilled.

“We are tired of assurances. We want action. This time, we are serious. From June 2, our services will be withdrawn until we are paid,” Mr. Boateng declared.

The impending strike could have significant implications for healthcare delivery across the country, especially in rural and under-resourced areas where rotational nurses and midwives are often the main providers of care. As the June 2 deadline approaches, the Association is calling on the government to take urgent steps to resolve the payment delays and avoid further disruption to healthcare services.
