Sekondi-Takoradi MCE Highlights Major Developments In Sanitation, Security, And Education

The Metro Chief Executive (MCE) of Sekondi-Takoradi, Lawyer Frederick Faustinus Faidoo, has announced major strides in sanitation, infrastructure, security, and education during his address at the Second Ordinary Meeting of the Assembly held on July 29 2025.

In his presentation, the MCE praised the peaceful nature of the metropolis and assured the public of continued vigilance through the Metropolitan Security Council (METSEC). He disclosed that METSEC would soon act on illicit activities discovered behind the Sawmill at Kokompe, following a recent fact-finding mission.

As part of efforts to improve public safety, the Assembly has ramped up streetlight repairs, aided by a refurbished hydraulic platform and support from local Assembly Members.

Boost for IGF Staff and Revenue Drive

In a move aimed at boosting morale, salaries of Internally Generated Fund (IGF) staff were increased by 10% from July 2025. The MCE emphasized that the Assembly is working on innovative strategies to enhance revenue mobilization, with special attention to improving sub-metro financial management.

The MCE went on to talk about the sanitation issues in the region. He said that sanitation remains a top priority, with Phase 1 of a large-scale desilting project completed and Phase 2 set to commence. Tools have been procured to support regular clean-up exercises, especially in response to President Mahama’s monthly sanitation day initiative. Significantly, the Assembly is expecting a visit from the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group in August to assess the city’s waste management system. If successful, the visit will pave the way for installing a biodigester and recycling plant, drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Health Concerns Over HIV and Mpox

The MCE raised concern over the rise in HIV prevalence in the Western Region, increasing from 1.55% in 2023 to 1.62% in 2024, despite a national drop. He encouraged residents to adopt responsible behavior and take advantage of free HIV testing exercises. Additionally, he warned about emerging Mpox cases and pledged stronger collaboration with health authorities.

Education and Infrastructure on the Rise

The Assembly handed over two new 3-unit classroom blocks at Inchaban-Nkwanta and Takoradi and reported ongoing works on several school and health infrastructure projects. These include teacher accommodations, classroom blocks, and a new adolescent reproductive health center at Kojokrom.

Furthermore, Sekondi-Takoradi is benefitting from Tullow Oil’s new scholarship initiative, offering free application forms at the Metro Education Office. However, the MCE cautioned that selection is competitive.

Flood Resilience and Sister City Initiatives

A £23.8 million Takoradi Flood Resilience Project funded by the African Development Bank and International Investment Organization will soon begin. The project includes drainage and road works, reservoir construction, and eco-friendly urban solutions.

Meanwhile, efforts are underway to revive and establish new sister city relations, including discussions with the Indian High Commissioner about potential partnerships with Indian cities.

Promoting Agriculture and Preparing for the Future

Under the “Feed Ghana Programme,” 20 farmer groups have been registered for support. The Department of Agriculture also reached 667 farmers in recent outreach programs to promote modern agricultural practices. Finally, preparations for the 2026–2029 Medium Term Development Plan are progressing, guided by the government’s transformation agenda.

Lawyer Faidoo concluded his address by commending Assembly Members and stakeholders for their support and reaffirmed his commitment to steering the city toward inclusive development and prosperity.
