The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has disbursed a total of GH¢143,187.60 to support 31 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) within the metropolis as part of efforts to promote economic independence and reduce street begging.
The disbursement exercise, held on Thursday, February 27, 2026, at the forecourt of the Assembly, saw beneficiaries receive livelihood equipment and cash support to enable them to establish or expand income-generating activities.
A total of GH¢96,300.00 was used to procure items for beneficiaries, while GH¢30,367.60 was disbursed as cash support. Additional costs included GH¢9,220.00 for the disbursement programme, GH¢4,420.00 for needs assessment, and GH¢2,880.00 for the Fund Management Committee, bringing the total expenditure to GH¢143,187.60.
Items distributed included:
- 10 deep freezers
- 10 ice chests
- 1 water pump
- 1 oven
- 2 laptops
- 1 washing machine
Officials indicated that the items were provided based on individual applications and needs assessments conducted by the Department of Social Welfare.
Speaking after the programme, the Metropolitan Chief Executive of STMA, Lawyer Frederick F. F. Faidoo, explained that three percent of funds transferred from the central government to the Assembly is allocated to support persons with disabilities.
According to him, once the funds are received, they are handed over to the Social Welfare Department, which reviews applications, conducts needs assessments, and determines the most appropriate form of support.

He emphasized that the Assembly prefers providing equipment rather than only cash support, noting that productive tools will enable beneficiaries to work, earn income, and support themselves and their families.
He cautioned recipients against selling, misusing, or keeping the items unused at home, adding that officials would conduct monitoring visits to ensure they are being used for their intended purposes.

“If they are well established, it benefits all of us,” he indicated, stressing that the initiative is not a one-time intervention but will continue as and when funds become available.
Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the support, describing it as timely and impactful.
Madam Linda Sackey a who received a deep freezer, said the equipment would help expand her small business and improve her ability to provide for her household.
Another beneficiary indicated that the assistance would reduce dependency and give them the opportunity to work with dignity.
Several recipients pledged to use the items responsibly to justify the confidence reposed in them by the Assembly.
Also present at the programme was the Chairman of the Social Services Committee and Assembly Member for Ridge Ministries and European Town Electoral Area, Hon. Samuel Kojo Mensah. Media personnel were also in attendance.
