On July 19, 1965, the Cedi replaced the Ghanaian Pound as the country’s sole legal tender, marking a significant step in Ghana’s economic history.
Over the past six decades, the Cedi has undergone several transformations to adapt to the evolving needs of the economy. These changes reflect Ghana’s resilience, innovation, and pursuit of economic stability. To commemorate this milestone, the Bank of Ghana will organize a series of events and activities from July to December 2025. These include official launch events, public exhibitions, educational campaigns, and stakeholder forums.

The Bank of Ghana invites Ghanaians and stakeholders to join in celebrating this important occasion, which offers an opportunity to reflect on the Cedi’s history, celebrate progress, and reaffirm the collective responsibility to protect the currency’s value and integrity. The Cedi is not just a medium of exchange but a symbol of national pride, heritage, and aspirations for a prosperous future.
