The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 15% reduction in transport fares. The new fares will start on Saturday, May 24, 2025.
The decision was made after a meeting between the GPRTU leaders and the Minister of Transport.
The spokesperson for GPRTU, Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro, said the drop in fuel prices led to this reduction. Fuel prices have gone down by about 18%, and the union decided to reduce fares to help passengers.
He also said other costs like lubricants, DVLA fees, and taxes have not gone down. But the union still chose to lower fares to support Ghanaians.
Alhaji Moro asked all drivers to obey the new prices. He warned that drivers who do not reduce their fares will face punishment.
He also called on passengers to report any driver who refuses to reduce the fare. He said people should not fight or beat anyone, but they should go to the nearest police station.
“If fares go up and drivers take it, they should also take it when it comes down,” he added.
The GPRTU says it will monitor drivers and deal with those who don’t follow the new fare.
