The United States government, under the Trump administration, is reportedly considering adding Ghana and 35 other countries to an expanded travel restriction list. This proposed measure follows a memo signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to a report by The Washington Post.

The memo highlights security and documentation issues, including poor civil registry systems, lack of reliable identity documents, and high rates of visa overstays by citizens from affected countries. Other concerns include countries offering citizenship by investment without residency requirements, and alleged antisemitic or anti-American activities.

Countries named include major U.S. allies such as Egypt, Djibouti, and Ghana, as well as others across Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. The affected nations have been given 60 days to propose reforms or face visa and travel restrictions.

This move would significantly escalate U.S. immigration controls and could impact bilateral relations and visa access for Ghanaian travelers.
