The University of Ghana has officially commenced construction on a $10 million Korea-funded ICT Centre, set to become a key driver of innovation, research, and entrepreneurship in the country.
Known as the Ghana-Korea Centre of Excellence for ICT-Based Startups and Research, the facility is being developed on university-allocated land and is expected to be completed by 2026.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Professor Gordon Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, hailed the initiative as a landmark investment and a testament to growing bilateral ties between Ghana and South Korea.
“I am told that this is the largest grant ever from the Republic of Korea to Ghana. It’s a symbol of true fraternity and the ever-deepening relationship between our two nations,” he stated.
Korean Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Park Kyongsig, also addressed the gathering, describing the project as a gift of friendship and a forward-looking investment in Ghana’s future tech ecosystem.
“This project has two pillars—the ICT centre and an incubation centre for startups. We will support their growth and hope one of these startups becomes a global tech leader,” he noted.
Once completed, the Centre will serve as a state-of-the-art hub for digital skills training, innovation, and the development of ICT-based startups. It will also align with Ghana’s national digital economy agenda, supporting young entrepreneurs and researchers in the tech space.
