Maresca delighted as Foxes edge into FA Cup quarter-finals

Leicester boss Enzo Maresca was delighted to see his side edge past Bournemouth and advance to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

It took the Foxes until extra time to net the winner when Abdul Fatawu gathered the ball on the edge of the box and curled a shot into the top right corner.

The strike was enough to see Leicester past the Cherries and into the competition’s last eight for the first time since they won the competition in 2021.

Maresca was especially pleased with the manner of his side, who recovered from a 3-1 defeat to Championship promotion rivals Leeds last week.

He said: “We are happy because tonight we missed many chances, but at the end we have been lucky because we could score one goal.

“We try always to share minutes in this kind of game because all of the players deserve the chance.Leicester youngster Abdul Fatawu scored the winner in extra time

“Tonight was a mix between many young players and some senior players and in the end, we played a good game.”

The Cherries managed just four shots on target to their Championship opponents’ six, with both teams hitting the post in normal time.

This loss extends their winless run to six games in all competitions — and Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola was saddened by the result.

The 41-year-old said: “It is disappointing and it was a bad night for us because at the end it was the worst thing that could happen.

“We played 120 minutes with very tired legs. We had a lot of chances but you have to make the right decision at the end; with the last pass, last shot, and we finished a lot of shots very high.

“I think it’s an opportunity missed.”

Brighton and Hove Albion defender Tariq Lamptey has joined the Black Stars in Marrakech, Morocco, for the international friendlies against Nigeria and Uganda.

The 23-year-old is returning to the national team for the first time since the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Lamptey has not featured for the Black Stars since the 3-2 victory over South Korea at the global showpiece.

He has been consistently dropped for international assignments due to his niggling injuries. Due to the setback, the England-born Ghanaian also missed the Africa Cup of Nations staged in the Ivory Coast.

However, his injury comeback is a huge boost for the Black Stars as new coach Otto Addo prepares his team for June’s World Cup qualifiers.

The former England youth international is expected to play in Friday’s West African derby against Nigeria and next Tuesday’s game against Uganda.

The Black Stars hope to put behind them a disastrous AFCON by beating their arch-rivals, Nigeria.
