Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Samuel Nartey George, promises a reduction in data costs by the end of 2025, following a strategic roadmap developed with key industry players.

The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced that data prices are expected to drop by the end of 2025. This move comes as part of a broader effort by the government to improve digital access and reduce the cost of internet connectivity for all citizens.

Speaking in Accra at the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day celebration, Mr George revealed that a high-level committee was formed earlier in February. The committee, made up of representatives from telecom companies, the National Communications Authority (NCA), and other sector stakeholders, has developed a comprehensive roadmap aimed at reducing data costs.

“The committee worked for 13 days without any payment from taxpayers,” Mr George noted.

He further explained that the NCA and industry players are currently engaging to implement short-term, medium-term, and long-term strategies from the roadmap. Mr. George, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, emphasized his commitment to seeing data prices fall before the year ends.

“To the citizens of this country, my promise is that by the end of this year, we will see data prices drop. I remain committed to it. We will deliver on that,” he assured.

He also addressed recent criticism on social media, clarifying that lowering data costs is a technical process that involves careful planning and collaboration—not a decision that can be made with a single directive. The Minister disclosed that his ministry has engaged the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to conduct an independent review of data tariffs in Ghana. The report is expected within eight weeks and will be used alongside the NCA’s findings to inform future policy decisions.

“I will not give directives that harm the industry. Instead, I will consult widely and ensure decisions protect investments while improving service quality and affordability for Ghanaians,” Mr George added.

With growing demand for affordable internet access across the country, the Minister’s assurance of lower data prices has been welcomed by many. The success of this initiative will depend on continued collaboration between the government, regulators, and the telecom industry.
