The Asantehene, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is set to make a historic visit to Takoradi Technical University (TTU), marking the first official visit by a reigning Asantehene to a tertiary institution in Ghana’s Western Region.
The landmark visit represents a significant national moment, highlighting and strengthening the longstanding historical, cultural, and economic ties between Asanteman and the Western Region. These connections have been nurtured over centuries through trade, migration, education, and shared development initiatives.
The visit comes at a time when TTU continues to gain national and international recognition for academic excellence. The University was recently ranked first in Ghana in the latest AD Scientific Index for the third consecutive year, reaffirming its status as a leading institution for research, innovation, and applied sciences education.
Plans for the visit were initiated following a courtesy call on Otumfuo Osei Tutu II by a delegation from the 2026 Faculty of Applied Arts and Technology (FAAT) Week Planning Committee, led by Prof. Frederick Boakye-Yiadom, on 25 April 2026. During the meeting, the University formally invited the Asantehene to participate in the celebrations.
Scheduled for 12–30 July 2026, FAAT Week seeks to celebrate innovation, creativity, and academic excellence while recognizing individuals and institutions that are contributing to national development. This year’s edition places particular emphasis on the relationship between tradition and academia, with the Asantehene’s participation expected to elevate the event into a landmark national celebration.
As part of the engagement, members of the Planning Committee presented specially designed souvenirs featuring images of the Asantehene and shared details of the planned activities for the event.
The Western Region and Asanteman share a rich and enduring historical relationship dating back to both pre-colonial and colonial periods. In contemporary Ghana, these ties continue to manifest through collaborations in education, industry, mining, agriculture, and infrastructure development.
Beyond its ceremonial significance, the anticipated visit is expected to serve as a powerful affirmation of the enduring bond between Asanteman and the people of the Western Region. It will also further position Takoradi Technical University as a national symbol of academic excellence, innovation, cultural heritage, and regional collaboration.
