A new survey by the Office of the President shows that social media is the most popular way Ghanaians get information about government services. The Public Opinion Survey was done between October and December 2024.
According to the report, many Ghanaians use social media to learn about services like the Ghana Card from the National Identification Authority (NIA). The NIA was named the most popular government office under the Office of Government Machinery (OGM).
Speaking at a presentation of the report in Accra, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, Deputy Chief of Staff, said a Performance Ranking Index of all OGM institutions will be released by the third quarter of 2025.
She urged government agencies to use social media and digital tools more. This, she said, would help inform the public about their work and build trust. She also called on the agencies to update their websites regularly and publish their annual reports, including how they spend money and how they work.
Nana Oye added that government offices must train staff to be professional, helpful, and responsive to citizens. She said they should hold town hall meetings and public campaigns to engage with people.
Deputy Government Spokesperson, Madam Shamima Muslim, said that following the survey’s advice would help improve government services. She said websites must be easy to use and allow the public to give feedback.
Dr. Evans Aggrey-Darko, Head of the Civil Service, asked government offices to use more technology. This would reduce face-to-face contact, which often leads to corruption. He also urged the offices to make better use of their internal auditors to prevent financial problems.
Agencies under the Office of Government Machinery include: State Protocol, Council of State, State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), National Population Commission, Ghana Aids Commission, Millennium Development Authority, Zongo Development Fund, MASLOC, National Centre for Early Warning, Ghana News Agency, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation and Information Services Department.
These agencies support the President and help improve public services. The 2024 Public Opinion Survey had over 1,000 responses from all 16 regions. Researchers used focus groups, interviews, and online forms to collect data.
