Concerned Takoradi Market Traders to Demonstrate Over Delayed Market Project

Leaders of the Concerned Traders of the Takoradi Central Market have announced plans to embark on a peaceful demonstration on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, over the delayed completion of the Takoradi Market Circle redevelopment project and the growing hardships facing traders.

The leadership of the group made this known during an interview on the Melody Breakfast Show hosted by Haruna Babangida on Monday morning.

Representing the leadership of the concerned market women in the studio were Madam Lamisi Adam and Madam Enyonam, who explained that the prolonged delay in completing the market project has severely affected businesses and livelihoods of traders in the metropolis.

According to them, many traders continue to operate under difficult conditions at the temporary market, affecting sales and creating discomfort for both traders and customers.

The traders also raised concerns about insecurity at the temporary market location currently being used pending completion of the new market facility. They alleged that theft and other security-related incidents have become a major concern for many women operating in the area.

In a formal notice addressed to the Western Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service, the group stated that the peaceful demonstration will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19.

The planned route for the demonstration will start from the Baptist Church in Takoradi through Paa Grant Roundabout, Old John Sarbah Road, First Samuel Road, Amanful and Sagoe Junction before ending at the Market Circle near the former Police Station, where the group is expected to hold a press conference.

The association is also seeking police protection and cooperation to ensure a peaceful and successful exercise.

The traders say the demonstration is intended to draw the attention of authorities to the urgent need to speed up work on the market project and improve security conditions at the temporary market facility.
