The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) on Saturday, June 6, 2026, carried out its scheduled sanitation day exercise within the Takoradi Sub-Metro, reinforcing ongoing efforts to promote environmental cleanliness and improve public health standards across the metropolis.
The exercise recorded strong participation from residents, sanitation officials, media personnel, and civil society actors, including members of the Corp Nation Foundation. Officials from Takoradi Technical University (TTU) and The Church of Pentecost were also present, contributing to the multi-stakeholder participation in the exercise. Despite cloudy weather conditions, community members remained actively engaged in cleaning activities across various parts of the sub-metro.
As part of supervision and enforcement, officials from the Assembly, together with visiting dignitaries, toured selected communities to inspect compliance and encourage full participation. The inspection exercise allowed authorities to assess the level of involvement and reinforce the importance of proper sanitation practices among households and traders.
The sanitation day was attended by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, and the Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson. Both officials emphasized the need for sustained collective responsibility in maintaining environmental cleanliness and improving sanitation outcomes in urban communities.
They also reiterated government’s commitment to strengthening sanitation systems, improving waste management practices, and reducing environmental risks such as flooding and sanitation-related diseases.
Field observations indicated that many residents actively took part in sweeping, clearing refuse, and desilting drains, demonstrating growing community awareness and participation in environmental hygiene efforts.

Although official inspection rounds concluded in some areas during the late morning, sanitation activities continued in several communities afterward, with residents maintaining cleanup efforts across the sub-metro.
The sanitation exercise forms part of STMA’s broader strategy to institutionalize regular clean-up campaigns and promote sustained civic responsibility for environmental management.
Further engagement and feedback from stakeholders are expected to support ongoing improvements in sanitation planning and enforcement across the metropolis.
